Currently in design this two phase project consists of a new 68,000 sf County Administration building and 45,000 sf Health and Human Services building. These two facilities are the initial phase of the Columbia County Master Plan and are located in the southeast corner of downtown Portage Wisconsin. The building site straddles the canal between the Wisconsin and Fox rivers where the lumberyard and historic Portage Hosiery Company once stood. The exterior design, although contemporary, incorporates elements of the canal’s past with the introduction of shed roofs, a simple rhythm of punched windows and similar material palette. Connecting the two buildings, is a pedestrian walkway which incorporates cast stone piers and expressed structure similar to the many historic bridges and train truss bridges found throughout Columbia County.
The project is to be bid at the end of December with the groundbreaking in early spring 2016. The second phase of the project consists of renovating the current County Administration building for the Courts and court related departments. Design for this phase begins mid 2016 with construction completed in 2018.
